Looking for bass that makes your ears vibrate? We’ve found it.
Skullcandy’s latest creation brings music to a new level with clear sounds and incredible bass, along with all the necessary specs you could hope for. Of course, it’s what you’d expect from an AUD$599 price tag.
With bass being the major selling point, we knew we had to test this new piece of technology out. And as avid music lovers, we figured the Australian electronic band, Knife Party, would be perfect for this test. They know bass and they know piercing sounds. And boy, we were not disappointed.
The best way to describe the bass is like having your ears thoroughly massaged via vibratory action. Of course, this is only if you have the dial pushed all the way up. Like most bass systems, the best setting is somewhere in the middle. It affords the right amount of punch while still giving focus to the marvellous melodies. Or, the best explosions if you’re watching something on Netflix or Stan via mobile.
Indeed, with this much resonating bass, you need space to put it, which makes the Crusher ANC a little bulkier than most on the market. But the bulkiness does not detract from comfort.
As creatives, we can spend long stretches listening to music. And if the headphones clutch too hard or the cushions are not soft enough, you’d be wanting a break from wearing headphones every half hour. But Skullcandy’s Crusher ANC sits quietly and without tension. It doesn’t clasp, it rests making it perfect for long uninterrupted walks or road trips. But don’t expect it to stay put when laying down in bed – it’s not the lightest on the market, pushing above 300 grams.
But there are more specs to these headphones that enhance the hearing. First is the active noise cancellation (ANC) and ambient mode function, both which can be activated via touch through a switch located on left ear cup. This can be annoying especially if you’re used to pushing the headphones in during use.
While many situations could provide uninterrupted sound thanks to the ANC – like train trips and working in the office – users with ample hearing will find it hard to get complete noise cancellation in busy environments like city streets and supermarkets. As for ambient mode, which actively brings in outside sounds, it works well provided you don’t have the music blaring.
Distinguishing themselves aside from the headphone market, the most impressive function featured on the Skullcandy Crusher ANC is the ability to personalise the headphones to your particular hearing. This is impressive considering that at least one in seven Australians have some level of hearing impairment. The personalising hearing test can be done via the Skullcandy app, and it takes only three minutes to do. Once you’ve done the test, you can test the difference by switching your personalised sound profile on and off.
Aside from the sensational sounds and bass, all Skullcandy Crusher ANC’s include an inbuilt GPS tile, allowing you to keep track of them. Available in two colours, black and ruby red, they also come with their own zip-up protective travel case, as well as an auxiliary connector for devices or computers that don’t house Bluetooth technology.
However, it must be said that with this much technology, the headphone’s battery life is not as impressive as what we thought it would be. It can last up to 24 hours with active listening via Bluetooth, with heavy bass and ANC. That being said, the headphones come with rapid charging, where 10 minutes of charging gets you about three hours of playtime.
Skullcandy’s Crusher ANC headphones are a worthy pair, bringing exceptional bass and impressive technology. They are easy to handle and simple to use. Perfect for anyone who loves a good dose of bass with their music, or ideal for travellers who enjoy watching high-energy cinema on their hand-held device.
