Australia, draw the curtains and set the scene: Broadway Favourite Hamilton is coming to Disney+.
All hype, or a piece of creative genius? Well, now you can find out as the 11 time Tony Award, Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical, Hamilton, will be coming to you on screen this winter.
That’s right. The Walt Disney Company has announced that Disney+ will fast track the premiere of the filmed Broadway performance of this multi award-winning Broadway production to homes from July 03 onwards.
Filmed at the New York Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016, the Broadway (and now also Disney+) show was produced by an impeccable lineup including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail (who was also the brains behind the direction).
Starring Tony Award winners Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton), Daveed Diggs (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler) and Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr), Hamilton is expected to grip its viewers on screen just as it is already famous for doing in its original theatre production.
The musical, accompanied by lyrics, book and now this film version were all created by Lin-Manuel Miranda whose previous work includes Mary Poppins Returns, Moana and His Dark Materials to name a few. This famous Broadway story follows the happenings of American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton and draws its music heavily from hip hop, RnB and soul, as well as classic show tunes.
Disney+ hopes that this live capture of the theatre production will hopefully transport viewers to feel as if they’re sitting in the audience of the Broadway show – all in a uniquely intimate way. Combining two of Disney+’s renowned elements – magical film and effortless streaming, Hamilton is sure to capture the hearts of live theatre lovers.
The final result? A cinematic performance that creates a whole new way on how to experience the stage.
