Chula, known for it’s dual translation for “hot” or “beautiful” most certainly is the newest, jaw dropping restaurant to hit the block.
A contemporary and sophisticated Mexican restaurant has opened today in the bright streets of Kings Cross.
Leaders behind infamous Barrio Cellar, Peter Lew and Nicole Galloway have designed Chula to establish a new dining experience that’s embedded with Mexican traditions and the regionality of the cuisine.
The kitchen, led by Alvaro Valenzuela from Mexico City, came to Australia to join Chula’s determined team.
Alvaro has worked in various Mexican restaurants around both Mexico City and New Zealand. He ventured down under to share his perfectly crafted culinary skills to a population that just can’t get enough of Mexican fusion.
Inspired by his grandmother (“abuelita” in Spanish), Alvaro has an extensive range of culinary skills, and a jaw-dropping palette struck with zest and an assortment of flavourful tastes.
“She taught me that everything in life should be done with love, and that includes cooking,” says Alvaro.
Shaking it up in the bar is Founder of The Agave Cartel, Reece Griffiths, an agave expert or “aficionado.” Also to be referred to as the man we have the upmost faith in.
Reece created the drinks list at Chula as a true reflection of the people, places and culture of Mexico – fresh, vibrant, textural and of course stunning seasonal fruits.
Whether it’s a cocktail infused with agave or the extensive wine list, every drink on the menu has been specifically chosen to intensify the texture and aroma with every sip.
Apart from the smokey beef short ribs or the Mezcal sour, patrons are mesmerized by the space itself; designed by Joshua Clapp from Steel + Stitch, the restaurant reflects cities in Mexico, Tulum and Acapulco.
With earthy tones and raw textures, Chula has a story to tell every corner of the room. Vintage cabinets, organic hand woven pendants and a tequila shrine are just the few things that any Sydney-sider will fall in love with.
There’s no doubt that the name reflects the mesmerising space and the fiery food that shares a story every bite and sip.
