From riches to rags – these five Australians will get a real taste.

After two successful seasons starting in 2017, come Tuesday 09 June 2020 Australians will be able to settle in for the third instalment of SBS’ reality show meets documentary, Filthy Rich & Homeless.

Produced by the award-winning Blackfella Films (First Contact, DNA Nation, Deep Water: The Real Story), Filthy Rich & Homeless follows five high-profile Australians who have agreed to swap their privileged lifestyles for 10 days experiencing homelessness in New South Wales.

In this edition, the participants living amongst some of New South Wales’ homeless community will be emergency doctor and businessman Dr. Andrew Rochford; Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Arron Wood; restaurateur and entrepreneur Pauline Nguyen; comedian and radio presenter Ciaran Lyons; and actress and model Ellie Gonsalves. These five Aussies will find out what it’s like from having everything, to absolutely nothing.

Within this third season, the five participants will be separated to experience various forms of homelessness within central Sydney, Western Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Dapto and Nowra. Without their phones, ID and money, they’ll experience living in crisis accommodation and marginal housing, including boarding houses and caravan parks.

Given nothing but second hand clothing and a sleeping bag, the five celebrities will meet with those who live without a home everyday. No doubt, their eyes will be opened as they learn more about their stories of survival and gain better insight and understanding on the complex reasons for how and why homelessness exists. Along their journey, they will also be guided by journalist and advocate Indira Naidoo and social researcher and homelessness expert Dr. Catherine Robinson.

Blackfella Films producer Darren Dale and series producer and writer Jacob Hickey spoke about the project, “Our aim with this third season is to raise the bar even higher in terms of the public’s awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness. This crisis is getting worse, not just in the cities, but regional Australia too. And so we hope this series will have a genuine impact, inspiring and influencing those with the power to bring about the long lasting change that is so desperately needed.”

Since Filthy Rich & Homeless first premiered on our screens, it has since sparked a nationwide discussion on homelessness and helped reveal the realities of life to some of us Australians fortunate enough not to have experience it firsthand.

According to the last 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing: Estimating homelessness, approximately 116,000 people in Australia have no place to call home – whether that be living in severely overcrowded accommodation, living in boarding houses, homeless and staying temporarily in other households or improvising with tents or sleeping out.

This figure continues to grow, having increased by 13,988 persons since 2011.

Filthy Rich & Homeless Season 3 will be airing over three nights – Tuesday 09, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 June at 8:30pm – on SBS. Immediately after its premiere, Filthy Rich & Homeless Season 3 will be available on SBS On Demand.
